Principles and Studio Code of Conduct

Respect each other

  • This is a warm and welcoming community, but community doesn’t mean homogeneity. We’re complex individuals, here for different reasons and under different pressures.

  • Respect one anothers’ space on the floor, be generous in sharing equipment, steer clear of political or overly intimate topics of conversation and make new faces feel welcome - gyms can be an intimidating environment!

Respect the team

  • Book your sessions as far in advance as possible, give notice if you’re unable to attend, arrive on time (that means before the start of yoga & pilates classes), follow safety instructions. Ask for help if you are unsure or anything feels uncomfortable

Respect the space and gear

  • Clean, spray, and wipe down any gear you use. Don’t go crazy with the chalk, and be mindful of noise - in particular try to avoid slamming weights. See something weird or damaged? Report it to studio@lonefir.fitness or the front desk

Assume the best, and offer grace

  • None of us are perfect, we’re all going to fall short at times. If someone isn’t following these principles, offer them the grace you’d want to be offered

  • Let Thomas & Greta know if something is a problem and we will handle it

Code of Conduct

This community is made up of several hundred members, and all of us have different backgrounds, needs, strengths, things we want to work on, and reasons for being here. Some are here for guided strength classes, some for cardio, for yoga, pilates, mobility, for one-on-one personal training, for self-guided open gym workouts, or for any combination of these.

We think this diversity is a huge strength of the community, but it does mean we all need to adhere to some simple principles to ensure we get along well together.

1. Assume the best, be courteous, and offer grace

We’re all going through something in this crazy world, and exercise is often the best way to work off that tension. Blood is pumping, adrenaline is flowing, and folks are in very different headspaces.

Amidst all of that, it is critical that we remember to act with courtesy, consideration, and to assume the best of people. 99% of the time, if someone is figuratively stepping on your toes or if they seem brusque, it’s not intentional or malicious. They’re doing their best, and so are we all. Give them grace, and hope to be given grace in return!

2. Keep conversations appropriate

We respect absolutely your right to live your life, worship freely, love who you love, and hold whatever opinions and politics make sense to you.

But the gym is not the place for weighty, divisive, or intimate topics. Even if the person you’re talking directly to is perfectly comfortable, others around you (both trainers and members) may not be. We all want this to be a refuge from the relentless conflict and identity politics of modern life, and we really appreciate your help in keeping it a light, focused, and supportive public space.

3. Respect your trainers’ time and focus

Our trainers work incredibly hard to prepare workouts that will challenge, stretch, and take care of you. Please respect them by:

  • Booking as far in advance as you are able.

  • Showing up on time and ready to roll based on your class and appointment type

  • Listening to and following their instruction.

  • Asking questions if you don’t understand—we’re nerds about this stuff, and we love answering them!

4. Be proactive about sharing space and equipment

Situations will often arise in which we’re sharing space and gear with other folks. Everything in the gym (including the walls) is potentially an important part of your workout, so be considerate in your use of space and gear and communicate with others.

  • Give adequate distance: Particularly in class, be aware of who is working around you. Keep both of you safe by giving adequate distance, especially if someone is working with weights in a posture that makes it harder for them to check behind them (like back squats in the rig).

  • Mind the vibrations: Weightlifting is noisy, and this is never going to be a quiet environment (it started life as a factory!), but where possible, try not to slam weights. Even if you’re alone in the room, it carries a long way—our neighbors at the pottery studio can feel it all the way from the Main!

5. Clean your equipment

Leave any gear you use in the shape you’d want to find it. Spray and wipe anything you’ve touched, sweated on, or got chalky, and we can all help keep one another healthy and the equipment in excellent condition.
